What is an intervention?
An addiction intervention is defined as a group attempt to help a family member or friend get professional help for their substance addiction problems. It could involve your parents, spouse, and children as well as close personal friends and fellow employees. The ultimate goal of any intervention is to see that the individual returns to normalcy by overcoming their addictions and returning home to live a substance-free life. An intervention can also be conducted for other serious issues or traumatic events in the person’s life.
Normally, an interventionist (intervention specialist) supervises an addiction intervention. This professional, along with the support of other members attending the intervention, supervises the event while at the same time attempting to convince of the harm they are doing to themselves emotionally, mentally, physically, and even spiritually. The goal is to get that individual into an addiction treatment and recovery program so that they can start getting the professional help they need.
Although it is possible for an addiction intervention to be conducted without the assistance of an intervention specialist, it is not recommended. The specialist is skilled and trained to handle the individual’s reactions to the intervention whether they are positive or negative. Even though an intervention conducted without the supervision of a professional can be successfully, this is rare. Having professional involved increases the chance of intervention being successful and getting the person into an addiction rehab program.
Another key benefit of the professionally conducted addiction intervention is that they can instruct you and other members of the group to remain calm and level-headed, regardless of how the individual reacts to the event. This benefits the individual as well in that order is better maintained and the chances of them reacting violently is either drastically reduced or eliminated altogether. It also means improving your chances of keeping the individual in the meeting without walking out and being extremely resentful over the situation.
