Oxycodone Addiction

What is Oxycodone?

Oxycodone is classified as an opiate analgesic (painkiller) and is normally prescribed for the treatment of moderate to severe pain. It is derived from Thebaine, an opiate component that functions by altering the way your brain and central nervous system responds to pain. It is also available in combination with acetaminophen, aspirin, or ibuprofen in the following brand names:

acetaminophen – Endocet, Percocet, Roxicet, and Tylox
aspirin – Endodan, Percodan, and Roxiprin
ibuprofen – Combunox

Oxycodone has gained considerable favor among the medical community because of how effective it is and the fact that it has a lower addiction rate than what morphine does. However, the drug is very popular with recreational drug users and oxycodone addiction has become a serious public health concern.

Side effects of oxycodone

Oxycodone exhibits some very noticeable side effects and in some cases they can be very severe. These side effects include:

  •  constipation
  • drowsiness
  • dry mouth
  • flushing
  • headache
  • itching
  • lightheadedness
  • loss of appetite
  • mood changes
  • nausea
  • pinpoint pupils
  • red eyes
  • sweating
  • vomiting

Oxycodone overdose can be fatal or result in the individual going into a coma. Obviously, the excessive recreational use of the drug can be dangerous and life-threatening. So if acquiring the drug becomes a priority over everything else, there is a good possibility that you are experiencing oxycodone addiction and should seek professional help immediately.

If you fear that a loved one has a problem with oxycodone addiction, you should encourage them to get professional help as well. Be aware of the signs of overdose which are:

  • bluish coloring of the skin around the mouth, fingernails, or the lips
  • clammy and cold skin
  • difficulty breathing
  • dizziness
  • excessive sleepiness
  • fainting
  • limp or weak muscles
  • loss of consciousness
  • slowed or stopped heartbeat
  • slowed or stopped breathing

If you notice any of these, don’t take any chances and call 911. You may be saving your loved one’s life.
