Signs of Addiction

Recognizing the warning signs of addiction

Whether it is alcohol or drugs that a person is abusing, addicted to, or dependent on, the following are the primary warning signs of addiction that you need to be aware of:

You procrastinate with your responsibilities or begin to neglect them – for instance, you neglect your children and family responsibilities, you are excessively absent or late to work, or you are failing your school classes.

You are having problems with relationships – fighting with family members, close friends, and loved ones become more common. Additionally, your employer is warning you that your performance on the job is unacceptable.

You are having financial difficulties – abusing alcohol and drugs gets expensive and you eventually start paying your bills late or miss payments altogether because you are spending most of your money on substances first.

You are continually encountering run-ins with law enforcement – the following legal problems are just another one of warning signs of addiction and are an indication that an individual has a substance abuse problem and needs to get professional help:

  •   stealing so that you can support your substance habit
  •   driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  •   disorderly conduct at home or in public

You are taking dangerous risks while under the influence – when using alcohol and drugs you start feeling invincible and engage in potentially dangerous or life-threatening situations such as:

  •  driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs
  • engaging in unprotected sex, sometimes with multiple partners
  • using dirty syringes for injecting drugs

If you have noticed that any of these apply to you or a loved one, you are most likely a candidate for an addiction treatment and recovery program and should get professional help as soon as possible.
