Alcohol Abuse Rehab
Understanding what alcohol abuse is
According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), alcohol abuse is “the psychiatric diagnosis describing the recurring use of alcoholic beverages despite negative consequences.” It is oftentimes referred to as alcoholism, which is technically incorrect as alcoholism implies the addiction to or dependency on alcohol. However, there are numerous definitions that exist for alcoholism but only some of them actually related to alcohol abuse.
Typically, alcohol abuse rehab programs view this as being potentially dangerous and harmful to the individual and impairs their:
- ability to function on the job
- health and well-being (physically and psychologically)
- interpersonal relationships
Another form of alcohol abuse is “binge drinking” which is the consumption of numerous drinks in one setting. This type of drinking greatly increases the chances of:
- drunk driving
- fights and violent behavior
- injuries
- vandalism
Additionally, there can also be negative consequences financially, legally, and socially when an individual abuses alcohol. At the same time, binge drinking can be associated with certain neurocognitive deficits of the brain’s frontal lobe region. This includes the ability to of the region to process properly as well as impairing memory functions. Interestingly enough, binge drinking has been associated with the stress that returning to work after the weekend causes which is a primary cause of deaths on Mondays due to heart attacks.
The symptoms and warning signs of alcohol abuse
Many individuals will ask when alcohol abuse rehab becomes necessary. A lot of that depends on the individual and the extent to which they abuse alcohol. The symptoms and warning signs of alcohol abuse are its defining characteristics. Some of the more common ones include continual problems occurring at school or on the job, insomnia, irritability, and difficulty maintaining interpersonal relationships. There are also financial difficulties, legal problems, and social issues that typically arise.
The bottom line is that realizing when it is time to enter an alcohol abuse rehab program can mean the difference between life and death in the more serious alcohol related cases. The individual who continually abuses alcohol is eventually going to become addicted to it or dependent upon it. Once it has gotten to the point where these symptoms and warning signs are occurring with regularity, consider getting professional help immediately.
