Drug and Alcohol Detox Centers

A brief word regarding drug and alcohol addiction

For some individuals who are dealing with substance abuse, addiction, or dependency issues, they oftentimes try to overcome their problems without the help of one of the many drug and alcohol detox centers that are available today. In some cases, quitting like this works, but in most cases, it doesn’t. Granted trying to quit cold turkey is admirable and shows that the individual really wants to be living a healthier lifestyle that is free of these addictive substances.

Unfortunately, trying to quit on your own does not enable the individual to receive the care, monitoring, and supervision that the drug and alcohol detox centers provide. There are normally three stages to any drug or alcohol addiction rehab program:

  • detoxification and withdrawal
  • group and individual counseling
  • aftercare programs and support networks

Today, there are a number of drugs that the DEA monitors the distribution and trafficking of throughout the US. At the same time, a number of different health organizations and many medical professionals feel that drugs and alcohol are serious public health threats as well.

Choosing a drug and alcohol rehab program

You will quickly discover that there are two types of drug and alcohol detox centers. You have the older, more traditional facilities and the more innovative, alternative facilities. There are some very significant differences between the two even though they both have the same goal of helping the individual overcome their drug and alcohol issues so that they can return home and live substance-free for the rest of their lives.

Here are the primary differences between the two types of drug and alcohol detox centers:

Appearance of the facility – traditional facilities look like clinics, hospitals, or motels whereas the alternative facilities were designed to look more residential in appearance. Clients are provided with comforting, homelike settings to recover and rest in unlike the cold, uninviting looking traditional facilities.

Approach to drug and alcohol addiction rehab – the traditional drug and alcohol detox centers out there still rely on the older, more conventional treatment methods and therapies that many feel are ineffective and even out of date. Their approach to drug and alcohol addiction is more generalized.

Effectiveness of the programs – normally, where the different types of drug and alcohol detox centers are concerned, statistics that we have about them don’t lie. The traditional facilities witness failure rates as high as 80% in some cases, meaning that 4 out of every 5 clients that undergo their programs will eventually relapse back into their addictions. This is due to the generalized approach they take towards drug and alcohol detox.
