Alcohol Rehab Treatment

What is alcohol rehab?

Alcohol rehabilitation, or rehab for short, is the process wherein individuals who are suffering with alcoholism to overcome their physical and psychological dependency on alcohol. Typically, the individual will go through three stages when undergoing the alcohol rehab treatment process – detoxification, counseling/therapy sessions, and aftercare or support. Each one of these stages addresses a different aspect of addiction whether it is emotional, mental, or physical. Legal and social consequences are also covered.

Alcohol rehab treatment is the most effective and powerful way that you can break the alcoholism cycle because it is not just a quick fix. The best rehab programs address the emotional, mental, and physical consequences of the addiction as well as what may possibly be the underlying causes of it. The best alcohol rehab facilities offer the alcoholic a place to heal, live healthier, and get the support they need to continue recovering from the dependency. Additionally, the better programs help to enrich the body, mind, and soul of the suffering individual.

Women become alcoholics quicker than men

One of the aspects that we are aware of with alcoholism is that women are twice as likely to get addicted to alcohol as what men are. So what is the reason for this? From a physiological standpoint, women’s bodies contain less water. As a result, they tend to metabolize alcohol quicker than men do which means that the alcohol is more concentrated in their bodies. Biologically, estrogen plays a key role in the development of alcoholism in women while psychologically, depression is oftentimes at the root of their dependency.

Alcoholics that suffer with behavioral disorders and mental illness have a more difficult time of getting sober and then staying that way. Additionally, female alcoholics develop cirrhosis quicker than men and show a higher risk of succumbing to alcohol-related accidents. Men tend to start drinking in order to fill a void in their lives while women begin to drink because of traumatic experiences in their past (e.g. sexual or spousal abuse). Additionally, individuals who have alcoholics in their family histories are more likely to start drinking.

The elements of alcohol rehab treatment

Detoxification is the first stage of the alcohol rehab treatment process and usually the most unpleasant as this is where the withdrawal symptoms occur. These include:

  • anxiety and depression
  • blackouts or seizures
  • chills and sweats
  • irritability
  • sharp mood swings

The next stage involves group and individual counseling/therapy sessions. The final stage is aftercare and support which is ongoing throughout the recovery process.
