Alcohol Treatment

A brief word about alcoholism

Alcohol TreatmentAlso referred to as alcohol dependence, alcoholism is an addictive disorder that is extremely disabling in nature.  The compulsive and uncontrollable drinking of alcohol and alcoholic beverages are key characteristics of the disorder.  Fortunately, like other addictions whether alcohol or substance related, alcoholism is viewed as a treatable disease.  The chronic alcoholic not only suffers psychiatrically, but physiologically and socially as well.

From a historical standpoint, Magnus Huss originally coined the term “alcoholism” in 1849.  However, during the 1980’s, the medical community began referring to the disorder as alcohol abuse or alcohol dependence.  From the late 19th to the early 20th century, the disorder was called “dipsomania” before it was replaced with the terminology alcoholism.  Additionally, alcoholism also poses a serious public health threat.

Physical and psychiatric symptoms

The signs and symptoms of long-term alcohol abuse manifest themselves physically and psychiatrically as follows:

  1. Physical – the most common symptoms witnessed are cirrhosis, heart disease, nutritional deficiencies, and sexual dysfunction.  Additionally, women develop these long-term alcohol abuse related symptoms more rapidly than what men typically do.
  2. Psychiatric – there are numerous mental health problems that develop such as dementia which is the cause in 10% of the documented cases of this disorder.  As many as 25% of all alcoholics suffer with severe psychiatric disturbances, the most prevalent of which are anxiety and depression.
