Alcoholism Help

The devastating effects of alcoholism

Alcoholism has been referred to as a disease by the medical community as well as a mental disorder, both of which can be effectively treated and recovered from if the individual gets the right kind of alcoholism help. There are a number of areas with the individual that is negatively impacted by heavy drinking and a dependency upon alcohol. First and foremost, it adversely affects the individual on the physical level by leading to a number of serious health conditions and can even be fatal.

Secondly, alcoholism has an emotional and mental impact on the individual’s family members, loved ones, and friends. So when the alcoholic says “Don’t worry about it. I am only hurting myself”, it’s very obvious that this isn’t true. Families are torn apart, relationships never last, and friendships are lost when a person is drinking heavily and becomes addicted to or dependent on alcohol. Finally, the person who needs alcoholism help finds themselves continually having financial, legal, and social problems.

The difference between men and women

Women handle alcoholism completely different from the way that men do. They abuse it and get addicted to it for different reasons and need specific types of alcoholism help in order to overcome the addiction and recover from it. Women tend to develop long-term complications quicker than what men do when they become dependent upon alcohol. They also have a considerably higher mortality rate than what men normally do.

Long-term complications include damage to the brain, heart, and liver while also having an increased risk of eventually developing breast cancer. Their reproductive system and functions are found to be affected in many female alcoholism cases as well. As a result, women who need alcoholism help run the risk of developing a number of different conditions that typically don’t occur with men.

Knowing when you need alcoholism help

The Office of Health Care Programs located at Johns Hopkins University Hospital developed an alcohol screening quiz for individuals who think they may be having a problem with alcohol and need alcoholism help:

  •  Are you losing time on the job due to drinking?
  • Is your drinking creating unhappiness at home?
  • Do you drink out of shyness?
  • Is your reputation being affected by your drinking?
  • Do you feel any type of remorse after you have been drinking?
  • Has your drinking resulted in financial problems?
  • Have you lost ambition since you started drinking?
  • Have noticed that you are not as efficient when you drink?
  • Do you drink to escape the pressures and stress of everyday life?
  • Do you drink with others or alone?
