Help for Alcoholism
What is involved when you get help for alcoholism?
Whenever you set out to get help for alcoholism, you are going look for the most effective alcohol rehab program possible and one that has a high recovery success rate. Most of the better programs will be a very basic yet effective process that is comprised of three distinct stages as follows:
Detoxification and withdrawal – involves stopping the drinking of alcohol and giving your body the time it needs to rid itself of the toxins and any residues that may remain after the drinking has been stopped. There will be a number of withdrawal symptoms which includes:
- anxiety and panic attacks
- blackouts when the addictions are more severe
- chills, fever, and sweating
- depression
- erratic, unpredictable changes in a person’s moods
- irritability and a lack of patience which can lead to violent reactions
- possibility of relapsing back into one’s addiction
Regardless of how unpleasant the detoxification and withdrawal stage is, it is necessary in order to get on the road to recovery.
Counseling and therapy – sessions are conducted at both the group and individual levels. In the group sessions, you will normally:
- break down your walls of isolation and stop withdrawing
- gain the support you need from your peers and therapists
- share your past experiences and mistakes with individuals just like you
Aftercare programs and support groups – these supplement the recovery process so that you avoid relapsing once you return to society. Aftercare and support also plays a significant role in the entire process once you start getting help for alcoholism because it helps you face the challenges and pressures of everyday living. This includes:
- pressures of everyday life and the stress it creates
- a lack of understanding on behalf of those around you
- the temptation to drink alcohol again which may lead to a relapse
Entering one of these aftercare programs and getting involved in one of your local area support groups is always a wise decision, especially if you are not totally confident in your sobriety when you leave the addiction treatment and recovery and return home.
