Ativan Drug Rehab

What is Ativan?

Ativan Drug RehabAtivan is one of the marketed brand names for Lorazepam (generic name), which is a highly potent anxiety medication and classified in the benzodiazepine family.  It displays all of the 5 effects that are intrinsic with any benzodiazepine medications including being prescribed as one of the following types of drugs:

  • amnesic
  • anticonvulsant
  • anxiolytic
  • hypnotic/sedative
  • muscle relaxant

Additionally, it is prescribed for treating acute seizures, aggressive hospital patients, anxiety, and insomnia over the short term.  Ativan functions by targeting a specific neurotransmitter in the brain known as gamma-aminobutyric acid.  By increasing the work of this acid, it inhibits an individual’s nervous system which leads to a decrease in mental and physical excitement.

Ativan side effects

Naturally, Ativan has its side effects just like every other prescribed medication on the market.  There are the common side effects and then there are severe ones that should be paid attention to.

Common side effects:

  • clumsiness
  • dizziness
  • drowsiness
  • headache
  • lightheadedness
  • unsteadiness
  • weakness

Severe side effects:

  • memory loss
  • mood or mental changes (e.g, depression)
  • severe allergic reactions (including difficulty breathing and/or tightness in the chest; hives; itching; swelling of the face, lips, mouth, or tongue)

If you or someone you know is experiencing these, you should consult emergency services or a physician immediately, depending on the severity of these side effects.

Ativan addiction

As with any type of Lorazepam-based medication, there is a high potential for abuse and addiction.  Typically, the abuse comes in two forms.  Either Ativan usage is continued over the long-term even against the advice of a physician or it is used recreationally in order to get high.  It is now part of the DEA’s hot list for drug threats in the US and is classified under the category of illegally trafficked painkillers and other prescription drugs.  Ativan addictions are growing in number, hence the need for Ativan drug rehab programs.
