Darvocet Drug Rehab

What is Darvocet and what does it treat?

The names Darvocet and Darvon are the brands that the drug dextropropoxyphene is manufactured under. It is classified as an analgesic opioid and is typically prescribed for one of the following reasons:

  • cough suppressant (antitussive)
  • local anesthesia
  • mild pain
  • relieving restless leg syndrome (or RLS) symptoms

Darvocet Drug RehabThe drug, like codeine, is considered as being a weaker opioid. However, recreational use of Darvocet can lead to physical and psychological dependency and eventually addiction. Ironically, dextropropoxyphene is oftentimes prescribed to ease the withdrawal symptoms of individuals who have gotten addicted to opioids.

Darvocet side effects

The side effects experienced when taking Darvocet can range from being mild to severe. Recreational use of the drug can be extremely dangerous and require emergency medical treatment. Some of the documented allergenic reactions to Darvocet include:

  • breathing difficulties
  • facial, lip, throat, or tongue swelling
  • hives

Medical attention and treatment should be pursued immediately if any of these reactions to the drug occur. The more common (and milder) side effects experienced are:

  • anxiousness
  • bone and muscle pain
  • confusion
  • constipation
  • delirium
  • depression
  • dizziness
  • dry mouth
  • euphoria
  • extreme irritability
  • fatigue
  • flu-like symptoms
  • hallucinations
  • itching
  • muscle spasms
  • pupil constriction
  • sleeplessness
  • sweating
  • tremors
  • pset stomach

Additionally, Darvocet can result in a number of other side effects that are considered to be severe, such as:

  • cardiac arrest
  • circulatory collapse
  • clammy skin
  • coma
  • confusion
  • severe respiratory depression
  • stupor

Taking Darvocet cautiously is always recommended but recreational use of this drug should be avoided at all costs. Most of the addiction treatment and recovery centers in the US offer Darvocet drug rehab programs. Unfortunately, many of these are patterned after the more traditional facilities out there and have recovery failure rates.
