Demerol Drug Rehab
What is Demerol and why is it prescribed?
The drugs Meperidine or Pethidine are most commonly referred to as Demerol (brand name) and are narcotic analgesics (painkillers) which are highly addictive. Synthesized in 1932, Pethidine was the first synthetic opioid on record and was classified as an anti-spasmodic drug. Today, it is most commonly prescribed for pain that ranges from moderate to severe. Unfortunately, it is also become popular for recreational use because of the effects it has on the brain’s perception of discomfort and pain.
When it is used with alcohol or other narcotic substances, it can pose a serious threat to a person’s health. As a result of its recreational use popularity, dependency and addiction can develop easily. Despite its highly addictive nature, Demerol is oftentimes prescribed by physicians and is considered to be a first line or primary strong opioid. Additionally, its recreational use has necessitated the implementation of Demerol drug rehab programs at many of the addiction treatment and recovery centers located in the US today.
