Rohypnol Drug Rehab
What is Rohypnol and what does it treat?
Rohypnol is the most marketed brand name of Flunitrazipam, a benzodiazepine-based medication that is produced by the pharmaceutical division of F. Hoffmann–La Roche Ltd or more commonly, Roche. It is characterized as being an amnesic, anticonvulsant, anxiolytic, hypnotic/sedative, and skeletal muscle relaxant, which are the five intrinsic characteristics of the benzodiazepine family of medications.
Ironically, Rohypnol is not legally available in the US despite being a Schedule III controlled substance. At the time that this content was written the DEA is recommending that the drug be reclassified as a Schedule I. Rohypnol is typically prescribed for the treatment of acute insomnia because of its hypnotic side effects. Additionally, it has oftentimes been referred to as a “date rape” drug because of its ability to induce anterograde amnesia which is the inability to create new memories once amnesia was caused by a certain event.
Rohypnol abuse and addiction
Although the US views Rohypnol as a date rape drug, there is a greater concern for its widespread use for recreational purposes in certain circles such as:
- Attendees of “rave” parties
- Cocaine and heroin users
- High school and college students
So the drug has become extremely popular among younger age groups which make the use of Rohypnol a growing concern of the DEA and public health officials as well. The number of reported cases regarding serious illness and death by overdose related to the drug’s use is growing in numbers. Rohypnol is usually taken orally and oftentimes in conjunction with alcohol which intensifies the high or the desired effect of the drug.
Whether the drug is used for the long-term or the short-term, it can result in addiction and a physical as well as a psychological dependence on it. Long-term abuse of Rohypnol in increasingly larger doses makes the addictive characteristics and features of the drug much more pronounced. Not only does the prolonged use of the drug result in both physical and psychological, the sudden discontinued use of the drug results in withdrawal symptoms. As a result of the above, there are a number of addiction treatment and recovery centers that now offer Rohypnol drug rehab programs.
