Drug Treatment Therapy

Principles of drug treatment therapy

There are a number of principles that effective drug treatment therapy should be based on. These include the following:

  1. Addiction affects the function of the brain. Even though it is a complex disease, it can be treated.
  2. No two individuals are alike, therefore no two addiction treatment and recovery programs are ever alike.
  3. Treatment should always be available and staff members of those facilities should be available on a 24/7/365 basis.
  4. Drug treatment therapy needs to address more than the individual’s abuse of the substance. It needs to address the emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual needs of the person.
  5. It is critical that the individual remain in the addiction treatment and recovery program for as long as what is necessary.
  6. Group and/or individual counseling as well as other behavioral therapies should be the primary component where recovery and support are concerned.
  7. When combined with group and individual counseling sessions, medications may play a significant role in the treatment and recovery process.
  8. The individual must be assessed on a continual basis so that modifications can be made in order to adjust to the person’s needs
  9. It is possible that other disorders may be present with the addicted individual and may be at the root of their addiction.
  10. The detox stage is the first step but it does little to alter the tendency to abuse drugs over the long term.
  11. The treatment can be involuntary as well as voluntary and still be effective.
  12. Lapses during recovery occasionally occur, so it is important that the individual be tested for the presence of the substance throughout their stay in the facility.
  13. The drug treatment therapy needs to assess individuals for the presence of certain infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS or hepatitis B and C.
