What do we mean by sober living?
Sober living is intended to be an interim or transitional stage between the addiction treatment and recovery center and the individual’s home. Additional recovery time is provided so that the individual gains more confidence in their sobriety and can make a smooth transition back home so they can start living on their own again. They will be able to confront the pressures and struggles of everyday life without the need for coping by using alcohol or drugs.
Sober living facilities are typically apartment or homelike settings for the individual to live in while spend additional time recovering and learning additional relapse prevention techniques in the process to boost their confidence in their sobriety. In so doing, the individual will typically enjoy an easier transition back home to their communities and continue living a substance-free lifestyle in the process. Usually, the fear of relapsing back into their addictions will not become an issue.
Certain rules and regulations apply
No two sober living environments are ever alike and neither or the rules and regulations they impose. However, the primary requirement is that you must have completed an addiction treatment and recovery program before entering a sober living residence. No matter what facility you enter once you fulfilled the primary requirement above, they will all demand that you adhere to the following 5 rules in order to continue living and recovering there. These include:
- Alcohol or drugs are not permitted on your person or the property
- Random alcohol and drug testing is conducted regularly
- Mandatory attendance at weekly AA or NA meetings
- The peer group of the sober living residence must accept you before moving in
- Paying your monthly bills including your rent and utilities on time as well as being responsible for your actions
Granted, there will be additional rules and regulations that vary from one sober living facility to the next, but you can count on the above 5 being coming in all of them.
