Substance Abuse Treatment Center
The current substance abuse problem in the US
According to the DEA’s annual report released at the end of 2009, there are several drugs being distributed and trafficked throughout the US that are being viewed as the primary drug threats. There are 4 substances that are labeled as being the primary drug threats and 2 that are considered to be secondary and of growing concern. The primary ones are cocaine (crack and powder form), heroin, marijuana, and methamphetamine (including crystal meth.
The secondary threats are MDMA’s which are oftentimes referred to as “club” or “date rape” drugs which include Ecstasy and Rufilin or “Roofies.” In addition to these, the DEA is focusing on the illegal trafficking of prescription painkillers such as Oxycontin and Vicodin. However, where these prescription medications are concerned, it is not uncommon for abuse of and addiction to these meds to occur with the individuals that they are legally prescribed for.
Additionally, abuse of and addiction to these substances has also been labeled as major public health threats according the US National Health Institute and other prominent public health professionals. There are nearly 40 million reported cases every year involving serious illness, overdose, and death that are substance-related. So as you can see, there are growing concerns with both the health and legal communities. It is also the reason why the substance abuse treatment center has become the primary solution to the dilemma.
